Last night’s meeting featured an educational opportunity for the members of Post 78 to learn a bit more about aviation from two Sporty’s Academy instructors.
Gold Seal Flight Instructor Jeremy Henson lead the group discussion on the basics of aircraft instruments and aerodynamics. Explorers and parents alike learned a great deal about these topics and had several relevant questions to ask throughout the discussion. The aerodynamics discussion included a hands-on exercise to demonstrate Bernoulli’s Principle for the production of lift.
Master Flight Instructor Paul Jurgens followed up with a discussion of airport operations. This included the differences between towered & non-towered airports, basic airport markings, and the reasons for & use of traffic patterns. A traffic pattern exercise showed that 11 “airplanes” (at least Explorers pretending to be airplanes) would have serious issues if they all went for the runway in their own ways. An orderly traffic pattern allowed safe landings.
Lead Advisor Mark Wiesenhahn shared information on Young Eagles, the EAA Flight Plan including Sporty’s Next Step program, and the new AOPA Av8rs group.
